Caelan Doris Included in Irish Team While McCarthy Misses Out
Returning manager Andy Farrell has included captain Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy misses out.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the opening Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are not included because of injury, while number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation following the summer tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new member in the 34-man group, but Irish rugby authorities states uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "cover".
Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, back to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, as the two players set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as Farrell opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre choices. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish pack. The front rower has started a couple of his province's URC league matches this season and featured in Ireland A's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a cap.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Ulster lock Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.
The national team will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
